Ontario needs bigger, bolder action to be an energy superpower
October 23, 2025
QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to Prime Minister Carney and Ford’s SMR announcement at Darlington:
“At a time when we should be focussed on energy independence, these SMRs will rely heavily on US technology and US-enriched uranium.
If the Ford government truly wants to protect Ontario and become an energy superpower, it needs to invest in made-in-Ontario wind, solar, and energy storage. These are the projects that will lower energy bills, cut climate pollution and reduce reliance on American energy.
They’re the projects that will create good-paying, generational jobs using Ontario steel to manufacture racking for solar panels and wind turbines while generating affordable, reliable power.
Global investment in the green economy has reached $2.2 trillion this year alone. We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to lead in renewable energy, energy efficiency and clean-tech innovation.
Now is the time for innovation and bold action. The world is moving forward. Ontario can’t afford to be left behind.”
