Schreiner: “Protect Ontario. Invest in renewables.”

August 26, 2026

QUEEN'S PARK — Schreiner released the following statement in response to the Ford government suggestion that St Clair Township should build new nuclear or gas:

“Despite the Ford government’s best efforts to tip the scales in favour of expensive gas and new nuclear, low-cost battery storage outcompetes both in the government’s own competitive procurement processes.

And yet this government continues to push expensive SMRs that rely heavily on US technology and US-enriched uranium and ramp up gas plants fueled by fossil gas from the US.

At a time when we should be focussed on energy independence and generational jobs, Ontario needs to invest in made-in-Ontario low-cost wind, solar, and energy storage.

These are the projects that will lower energy bills, cut climate pollution and reduce reliance on American energy.

They’re the projects that will create good-paying, generational jobs using Ontario steel to manufacture racking for solar panels and wind turbines while generating affordable, reliable power.

Global investment in the green economy reached $2.3 trillion in 2025 alone. We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to lead in renewable energy, energy efficiency and clean-tech innovation.

This is how we can truly protect Ontario and become an energy superpower.”
