Hamilton deserves better than Ford’s destructive sprawl agenda
August 18, 2026
HAMILTON — Marchand released the following statement responding to news that the OLT has ordered the expansion of Hamilton’s urban boundary against city council’s wishes.
“Time and time again this government puts the interests of rich developers ahead of the people and places we love.
Hamilton City Council spoke up and said no to expanding our urban boundaries–but the Ford government steamrolled ahead.
It’s disturbing that this government can override local planning and democracy to line the pockets of his wealthy friends and donors.
We could easily build the housing we need within Hamilton’s existing urban boundaries–close to the things we need, without paving over Ontario’s precious farmland and nature.
That’s why Ontario Greens are fighting for this government to legalize gentle density so we can build more types of homes that people can afford within existing urban boundaries.
If elected, I will fight for housing that’s for people, not profits.
As the Greens candidate for Hamilton East–Stoney Creek, my plan to build more affordable homes includes:
- Protecting our prime farmland by stopping sprawl and building more homes in existing neighbourhoods;
- Fighting for stronger protections for renters, including real rent control and vacancy control;
- Taking a housing-first approach to ending homelessness by building more not-for-profit affordable and supportive houses.”
