Mark Bekkering named Greens candidate in Scarborough–Southwest
July 14, 2026
SCARBOROUGH — Mark Bekkering has been named Ontario Greens’ candidate for Scarborough Southwest in the upcoming byelection.
Frustrated by the failure of past and current governments, Mark believes Ontario needs a new approach—one that prioritizes a more equitable future for all Ontarians.
“The Ford government has let the people of Scarborough down. Families in my community are struggling to make rent, buy groceries and save for the future. Every year, we feel the effects of climate change get worse. Our community needs a government that’s going to fight for more affordable homes, better transit and a sustainable future,” said Bekkering.
“I’m excited to champion the Ontario Greens platform and, with the support of my community, make Ontario a better, more affordable place to live where people come before corporate profits.”
A leader with over 30 years of public service, Mark brings a wealth of experience in community development and environmental improvement. During his career with the City of Hamilton and City of Toronto, he led transformative initiatives that resulted in positive environmental change while creating economic and community benefits. Finding long term sustainable solutions that address our environmental, economic and community issues in balance is a core guiding principle for Mark.
“Mark cares about his community. He is a real leader who is committed to fighting for the people and places we love. He understands the importance of building a future where people come before profits,” said Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner. “I am confident that Mark can serve the people of Scarborough.”
Mark, his wife Adele, and their three children have proudly called Scarborough Southwest home for over 25 years. He ran for the Ontario Greens in the 2025 general election.
