Clancy tables renter protection bill
April 15, 2026
QUEEN'S PARK — Aislinn Clancy will introduce legislation today that would, if passed, protect renters from bad-acting landlords.
“Homes are for living in–not for wealthy investors and corporations to make a buck,” said Clancy.
“This government has spent years eroding renters’ rights. As a result, rents have never been higher, renovictions are skyrocketing and more than 85,000 people are facing homelessness.
I’ve heard from seniors in my riding who are already struggling to get by on fixed incomes, only to be met with false renoviction threats and coercion to leave their homes.
Without the resources to fight back, many are forced to choose between homelessness or moving far from their friends, family and community to pay double the rent somewhere else.
It doesn’t have to be this way. It’s time to get corporate interests out of our housing market and stop bad-acting landlords from taking advantage of renters.
Today, I will once again call on the Premier to take action by re-introducing my bill, the Keeping People Housed Act.”
Key measures in the Keeping People Housed Act would include:
- Expansion of rent control on all buildings, including those built after 2018;
- Reinstatement of vacancy control to limit rent increases between tenancies;
- Increased requirements for landlords to ensure that vacancy is required for renovations before filing an application for an N13;
- Measures to ensure that any buildings with six or more units with below mid-range rents, if demolished, are replaced with at least the same number, size and type of units with rent similar to those that were demolished; and
- The creation of a Rental Task Force to address the misuse of above-guideline rent increases.
