Ontario Greens stand with coalition challenging Ford’s bill 5
April 8, 2026
QUEEN'S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement supporting the constitutional challenge being levied by coalition of environmental non-profits against Bill 5:
“Doug Ford thought that he could ram Bill 5 through the legislature with no repercussions, bypassing consultations and slashing workers’ rights and democratic and environmental safeguards—but he was wrong.
The Ford government’s special economic zones give Ford and his cabinet king-like powers to override laws at their whim. Ontario Greens stand in firm support of this constitutional challenge to these no-law zones.
Just like with the Greenbelt, the Ford government will be forced to take accountability for this destructive and anti-democratic legislation. The people of Ontario will not allow this government to continue to cut deals for wealthy, well-connected insiders at the expense of Indigenous rights, worker and environmental protections, and the rule of law.
Ontario Greens continue to call on this government to immediately reverse Bill 5 before it wastes even more time and taxpayer dollars defending yet another piece of destructive legislation in the courts.”
