Schreiner tours housing solutions in Dufferin–Caledon
February 11, 2026
Schreiner began the day touring a local farming and housing co-op, Whole Village, where dozens of people live in a connected community for half the market cost of rent and new farmers can rent land for a low-barrier entry into sustainable farming.
“It’s encouraging to see rural community leaders like the folks at Whole Village find creative solutions to providing low-cost housing in their community while also offering affordable opportunities for new farmers to make a living and put food on our tables,” said Schreiner.
In Orangeville, Schreiner visited a permanent supportive housing facility operated by SHIP, a health service and housing provider. Meeting with residents and frontline workers, he emphasized the critical importance of a housing-first approach to addressing the province’s growing homelessness crisis.
“When we provide immediate, permanent affordable housing with access to mental health and addictions supports, we create the stability people need to stay housed long-term,” said Schreiner. “This isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s a win-win that reduces the financial burden on our municipalities and emergency services, while providing housing for vulnerable neighbours.”
Schreiner continues to call on the Ford government to fund affordable non-profit, co-op and supportive housing and to build more homes people can actually afford in the communities they love.
