QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement regarding Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition and Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition’s Lake Simcoe Under Pressure report released today:

“Doug Ford is supercharging sprawl and ignoring the climate crisis while our lakes suffer.

Today’s report is clear: 2021 is a make or break year for Lake Simcoe. The region was listed as one of nine eco-regions in Canada in crisis, as a result of sprawl and climate change.

We don’t need more sprawl.

We need smart development that is in harmony with nature and respects our natural heritage.

But Ford insists on pushing through environmentally destructive planning legislation that puts our natural spaces like Lake Simcoe at severe risk and increases emissions levels.

I echo the calls from the Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition and Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition to stop mass sprawl in the Simcoe watershed and to expand the Greenbelt to support Lake Simcoe’s health and the perseverance of farming in the area.”
