QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released this statement after the Education Minister promised to appoint a supervisor to investigate racism in the Peel school system:
“Change is long overdue in the Peel school system.
It is clear that some outside intervention is needed to make progress on dismantling the systemic anti-Black racism that the board has struggled to deal with.
It is completely unacceptable that Black students continue to feel unsafe or undervalued in a school system that treats them differently.
Educators and trustees must create a learning environment that supports Black students and understands their lived experience, not one that perpetuates systemic racism.
There have been many reports into what’s happening in this school board, and now it’s time to see meaningful progress for racialized students, whose futures are on the line.”
