Schreiner tables motion to implement wealth tax

October 27, 2026

QUEEN'S PARK — Mike Schreiner introduced a motion calling on the province to implement a wealth tax on the super rich to make life more affordable for everyone.

“In Ontario, everyday people are feeling left behind. People who work hard, budget for essentials and save every spare dollar are struggling just to cover the basics.

Meanwhile, the super rich are doing better than ever. Every hour, billionaires pocket more wealth than the average worker earns in an entire year. But instead of asking those people to pay their fair share, the Premier is cutting deals with them.

Ontario Greens believe our government shouldn’t work for the rich and powerful. It should work for everyone else.

That’s why I’ve tabled a motion calling on this government to immediately implement a tax on extreme wealth in Ontario.

Doug Ford continues to slash funding for the basics—things like healthcare, education and affordable housing. He says the money’s not there. But that’s not true. It’s just sitting untaxed, in trust funds and mansions and yachts. And Doug Ford just refuses to ask the multi-millionaires and billionaires who own it to pay their fair share, because those are the same people who donate to him.

Hardworking people are already doing their part and paying their taxes. It’s time for the super rich to do the same. Passing this motion is an opportunity for the Ford government to build a fairer, more affordable Ontario.”
