Greens return to Legislature with call for wealth tax
October 21, 2026
QUEEN'S PARK — With the provincial Legislature set to return next week, Schreiner and Clancy shared their focus for the upcoming session.
“In Doug Ford’s Ontario, everyday people can’t get ahead,” said Schreiner. “They’re doing all the right things – working hard, paying their taxes, saving every spare dollar – and still feeling left behind. Things that previous generations took for granted, like buying a home or starting a family, have slipped out of reach.”
“Meanwhile, the super rich are doing better than ever. The richest one per cent in Canada hold almost as much as the bottom 80 per cent combined. Every hour, billionaires pocket more wealth than the average worker earns in an entire year. But instead of taxing them, the Premier is cutting deals with them.”
“It’s time to bring fairness back to Ontario. That’s why when the Legislature resumes next week, the first thing we’ll do is table a motion calling for a wealth tax on the super rich.”
“This is about building the Ontario we want to live in, making life easier and more affordable for everyday people who are getting pinched by Trump’s tariffs,” said Clancy.
“A wealth tax is how we hire more doctors and nurses and reduce ER wait times. How we fix our schools and reverse Doug Ford’s OSAP cuts. How we put an end to homelessness. And how we build low-cost, made-in-Ontario renewable energy to power our economy and create good, generational jobs.”
“Everyone else is already paying their fair share. It’s time for the super rich to do the same. This is not a radical idea. What’s radical is letting the wealthiest among us hoard billions of dollars while everyone else struggles just to get by.
The Ford government is happy with the status quo, because the people hoarding all the wealth are the same people who donate to them. But we believe that our government shouldn’t work for the rich and powerful. It should work for everyone else.”
“Ontario Greens will spend every minute of this legislative sitting fighting for a government that puts people over profits,” said Schreiner. “We believe that a better Ontario is possible. A wealth tax is how we’ll afford to build it.”
