Schreiner supports call to combat Islamophobia

QUEEN'S PARK — Mike Schreiner made the following statement in support of the National Council of Canadian Muslims’ call to combat Islamophobia.

“Tomorrow marks five years since the Afzaal family was cruelly and senselessly killed in a white supremacist terrorist attack in London.

Along with all of Ontario and Canada, I continue to mourn this loss. 

I stand alongside the National Council of Canadian Muslims in calling for a unified effort to eradicate Islamophobia in our schools by implementing a program that would include Muslim history in curriculums, empower educators, build partnerships with communities and foster safe, inclusive environments for Muslim students and staff. 

This anniversary is a moment for all of us to mourn this heartbreak, reflect on the legacy of the Afzaal family and commit to fostering a culture of acceptance and strength in diversity.

Islamophobia and hate has no place in Ontario. And as elected officials, it is our responsibility to work across party lines and with all levels of government to stand up against rising levels of white supremacy.”
