Want to protect renters? Bring back rent control.
October 27, 2025
QUEEN'S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the Ford government backing off ending indefinite leases
“It’s a huge relief to see the Ford government backing off its proposed consultations to end month-to-month leases for Ontario tenants.
However, Bill 60 still contains concerning provisions that would undermine tenant rights at the Landlord and Tenant Board and reduce the compensation renters are entitled to when evicted without cause.
On top of this, rent remains totally unaffordable for most people in our province.
When will the Ford government stop with the distractions and finally deliver the housing solutions we need to solve the worsening housing affordability crisis?
Ontario Greens will continue to fight to protect renters and deliver the bold action we need to secure affordable housing for all. We are calling on the Ford government to:
- Scrap changes that weaken tenant rights proposed in Bill 60;
- Reinstate rent control on all units to regulate rental increases year-to-year;
- Implement vacancy control to limit rent increases between tenancies; and
- Establish a clear system for above-guideline rent increases that governs which renovations are necessary and can qualify for an increase in rent.
Especially during this time of economic uncertainty, Ontarians deserve to feel secure in their homes.”
