Doug Ford is breaking records: Toronto has never been this hungry
October 27, 2025
QUEEN'S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the release of Daily Bread Food Bank and North York Harvest Food Bank’s Who’s Hungry? Report:
“Toronto’s food bank use has never been higher. Since 2019, the number of people using food banks has gone up by a staggering 340 per cent. Over four million visits.
The cause? Doug Ford’s chronic underinvestment in housing. Ontarians are being forced to choose between paying rent and buying groceries.
Food banks are filling in the gaps that this government is creating and it’s not sustainable.
The recommendations from this report and from experts across the province are clear: the province must deliver on affordable housing.
When people have access to affordable, reliable housing, everything changes – they can put food on the table, sign their kids up for extracurriculars and start planning for the future.
Ontario Greens are fighting for an Ontario where people don’t go hungry and everyone has a stable, affordable place to call home. We’re calling on the Ford government to:
- Invest in affordable housing, including non-profit, co-op and supportive housing;
- Legalize gentle density and missing middle housing and build more kinds of homes to bring down housing costs for everyone;
- Reinstate rent control on all rental units to regulate rental increases year-to-year and implement vacancy control to limit rent increases between tenancies; and
- Immediately double social assistance rates so people with disabilities can afford the basic necessities.”
