Schreiner Delegates on Foodbelt in Centre Wellington
October 16, 2025
ELORA — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner and independent MPP for Haldimand–Norfolk Bobbi Ann Brady delegated on Bill 21: Protect Our Food Act at the Township of Centre Wellington Council meeting today.
Schreiner, who jointly introduced Bill 21: Protect Our Food Act with MPP Brady, presented the bill in a delegation at the Township of Centre Wellington’s Council Meeting.
In his remarks, Schreiner stressed the urgency of protecting farmland. “Ontario farmers grow more than 200 different crops on 49,600 farms across the province, and the sector contributes over $50 billion to the provincial economy and employs over 875,000 people. All of that is at risk because Ontario loses 319 acres of farmland every day to urban sprawl, major highway projects, aggregate mining and other developments.
Now is the time to protect our farmland, support farmers, and grow more food right here at home. Food security is national security—because without farms, there is no food, no future.”
If passed, the Protect Our Food Act would create a Foodbelt that would permanently protect our agricultural lands from being paved over by establishing a task force of farmers, agricultural experts and land-use planners to develop recommendations for a strong Foodbelt Protection Plan.
The resulting report would address key priorities such as reducing land speculation, improving soil health and protecting and enhancing farmland that is used for a variety of purposes. The Council is currently reviewing a motion introduced by Councillor Bronwynne Wilton, which would, if passed, formalize the Township’s support of the bill.
