It’s Ontario Agriculture Week, Ontario Greens call for a Foodbelt
October 5, 2026
QUEEN'S PARK — Schreiner released the following statement calling for stronger farmland protections to mark Ontario Agriculture Week.
“Ontario Agriculture Week is all about celebrating our province’s food and farming sector—the food it grows, the jobs it creates, the communities it strengthens and the economic engine it fuels.
Ontario farmers grow more than 200 different crops on 49,600 farms across the province, and the sector contributes over $52 billion to the provincial economy, employing 1 in 9 Ontarians.
But in Doug Ford’s Ontario, we’re still losing 319 acres of farmland everyday to unnecessary, expensive sprawl.
That’s because the Premier continues to bulldoze his way across our province with land grabs, urban boundary expansions, MZOs and super-sprawl highways. All to line the pockets of rich developers and Conservative donors.
That’s why independent MPP Bobbi Ann Brady and I have teamed up to put forward a bill that would, if passed, create a Foodbelt to permanently protect Ontario’s farmland.
This Ontario Agriculture Week, Ontario Greens are calling on the Ford government to pass the Protect Our Food Act to protect our farmland, support farmers and grow more food right here at home.”
