Schreiner stands with Ontario farmers at IPM

September 16, 2025

GRASSIE — Speaking to farmers and rural leaders at the 2025 IPM, Mike Schreiner called for urgent action to stop the loss of farmland.

“The Greens are ready to work across party lines to support farmers in this province.”

Schreiner emphasized that farmers are not only the backbone of Ontario’s $51 billion agri-food economy, employing over 875,000 people, but also the key to protecting Ontario’s food security.

“Protecting our economy and our food sovereignty starts with protecting the land that generates wealth and feeds families across this province. Thank you to the 49,000 farms across Ontario that grow and raise over 200 products.”

Ontario continues to lose an average of 319 acres of farmland every single day, a trend Schreiner says threatens jobs, rural communities, and the long-term stability of Ontario’s food supply.

“That’s why Independent MPP Bobbi Ann Brady and I introduced the Protect Our Food Act, to create a foodbelt that ensures we protect the farmland that sustains us.”

Schreiner stressed that the Ontario Greens are committed to working alongside farmers to strengthen rural economies, support local food systems, and preserve farmland for future generations.

“No farms means no food, no future. I want to thank everyone in the agri-food sector for all you do to feed the people of Ontario.”
