Doug Ford ensures Ontario finishes last place on child care

December 13, 2021

Every single province except Ontario has now signed a deal with the Feds. Ford’s failure to sign an affordable child care deal is hurting Ontarian families.

TORONTO — Mike Schreiner made the following statement in response to New Brunswick’s new child-care deal with Ottawa:

“Doug Ford’s failure to sign an affordable child care deal is hurting Ontario families’ wallets.

Every single province except Ontario has now signed a deal with the Feds.

Doug Ford likes to talk a big game on affordability. But when it comes to making the real decisions, like on affordable child care or housing, his delays and half measures hurt families.

We need a green and caring recovery that puts people and planet first. A recovery rooted in equity that supports those who have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, especially women.

And when it comes to child care, that means $10-a-day care that is accessible to all families including shift workers.

Many families are struggling and need all the help they can get. Child care is unaffordable in Ontario. In Toronto, for example, it costs the average family over $1,500 per month.

I’m calling on Ford to get an affordable child care deal done, ASAP. Ontario already finished last. Let’s not get lapped.”
