Ford fails to learn lessons, again

March 30, 2021

Carding will not stop the spread of COVID-19. It will disproportionately affect people of colour and those in the most vulnerable situations.

QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to yesterday’s Science Table report:

“Ford’s refusal to take decisive action for essential workers is putting us on a direct path towards another lockdown.

COVID spread is far higher and faster in regions where more low-income essential workers live.

Ontario’s Science Table is ringing the alarm bells. The new variants of concern will result in a considerably higher burden to Ontario’s health care system during the third wave compared to the second wave.

The more lethal variants now account for almost 70% of all cases.

And yet Ford continues to behave as if the pandemic is over.

Instead of implementing measures to actually prevent people getting sick — like a comprehensive safe workplaces plan that includes paid sick leave and paid time off for essential workers to get vaccinated — the government’s only response is to shuffle COVID patients across the province. It’s the usual reactive half-measures we’ve unfortunately come to expect.

I fear Ontarians are going to pay dearly for Ford’s inaction. Premier, it’s time to wake up.”
