Province must direct resources to COVID-19 hotspots

April 20, 2020

We might be flattening the curve overall, but we are failing to protect seniors in care.

QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement after health officials released updated modelling on COVID-19 in Ontario:

“I am relieved we are on pace for a best case scenario that will reduce the loss of life from COVID-19.

Public health measures are working to suppress the spread of COVID-19. We are indebted to experts and front-line workers for keeping us safe.

But the situation is dire in long-term care facilities and other congregate settings. We must take urgent action to prevent it from growing worse.

We might be flattening the curve overall, but we are failing to protect seniors in care. And we must put in strong measures to protect people in congregate living such as people in homeless shelters, group homes and prisons.

This modelling should give the Ford government all the information it needs to direct testing and other critical resources to these COVID-19 hotspots.

The province must urgently make up for its delayed response to keeping people in group settings safe.”
