Schreiner responds to shut down of non-essential workplaces
March 23, 2020
QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement after the Ontario government announced a shut down of non-essential workplaces on Wednesday:
“I support the government’s continued efforts to keep people in Ontario safe.
The more clear the instructions that the government can provide people, the easier it will be for individuals, businesses and organizations to understand and follow. This includes making it clear as soon as possible what are essential workplaces and what are not. And if schools are not returning April 6 as the Premier indicated, that should be announced to parents quickly.
It’s true the situation is rapidly changing. Now is the time for strong measures to contain the Covid-19 outbreak. That includes shutting down non-essential workplaces as announced today.
We must reduce the amount of people who can congregate to the lowest levels possible. 50 people gathering is far too many. We must retool our strong manufacturing sector to produce ventilators for patients, and gloves and masks for front line workers.
I will continue advocating for additional measures to support people, businesses and nonprofits through legislation, policy, and funding, including basic income security payments. We need these measures so that people in Ontario can focus on the health and well-being of themselves, their family and their neighbours during this rapidly evolving situation.
We all need to work together to support each other.”
