Jose Etcheverry is Director of the International Renewable Energy Academy, Associate Professor and Co-Chair of the Sustainable Energy Initiative of the Faculty of Environmental Studies of York University.
After obtaining his PhD at the University of Toronto, where he specialized in the adoption of hybrid renewable energy systems, he has been based at York University where he is currently focused on research, graduate and undergraduate teaching and developing the Sustainable Energy Initiative (SEI).
The SEI (www.yorku.ca/sei) is a knowledge mobilization effort focused on research and training and includes York University and leading national and international organizations. Dr. Etcheverry’s current research is centred on climate change mitigation, combining e-learning with experiential education, sustainable transportation solutions, and achieving 100% renewable energy communities with a focus on practical policy solutions, collaborative approaches and effective communication strategies.
In Canada, Dr. Etcheverry was instrumental in the organization of the Ontario Green Energy Act Alliance which achieved the phase-out of coal and the implementation of the Ontario’s renewable energy (RE) standard offer contract (that then evolved into Canada’s largest RE feed-in tariff program). At the local level he leads a consortium of renewable energy firms that designed and implemented Ontario’s first autonomous net zero solar electric facility for powering electric transportation solutions (for details see http://taf.ca/solar-ev-station-proves-the-power-of-local-climate-action-…).
Internationally, Dr. Etcheverry has worked with the Organization of American States in its efforts to organize renewable energy training protocols as part of the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas and with the World Future Council on its international 100% RE Campaign (which has been adopted by the Cities of Vancouver and Victoria and Ontario’s Oxford County). Dr. Etcheverry is also currently an advisor for the development of renewable energy projects in Algeria, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay.
Dr. Etcheverry is a founding member of the International Renewable Energy Agency’s Learning Partnership (www.irelp.org) and the RETScreen International Training Institute (http://sei.info.yorku.ca/retscreen/). He is a member of the Committee of Chairpersons of the World Council for Renewable Energy (www.wcre.de), a member of the experts network of Go 100% Renewable Energy (http://www.go100re.net), member of the Scientific Committee of the International Renewable Energy Storage Conference (http://www.eurosolar.de/en/index.php/events/ires-conference-eurosolar/73…) and a member of the Innovation Network of Japan’s Renewable Energy Institute (http://www.renewable-ei.org/en/innovation_nw/).
