The Ford government has rammed through legislation that centralizes control over Ontario schools and threatens the future of locally elected trustees. This is an unprecedented power grab that removes the democratic link between schools and the families they serve.

We cannot allow the province to silence local communities. The Ontario Greens are demanding that Doug Ford:

Stop the provincial takeover and restore the authority of locally elected school trustees.
Protect local democracy by ensuring school boards remain accountable to their communities, not just a minister in Toronto.
Fund schools properly to address the repair backlog and the critical shortage of support staff in our classrooms.

I am writing to demand that your government immediately stop its attack on local democracy and reverse the provincial takeover of Ontario’s school boards. Bill 33 centralizes control over our schools and threatens to eliminate the role of locally elected trustees. Trustees are the essential democratic link that keeps schools connected to the people they serve. Replacing local oversight with political appointees who answer only to the Minister is unacceptable. A school board in London should not be managed by a minister in downtown Toronto who is disconnected from the unique needs of that community. Furthermore, while your government focuses on seizing control, our schools are suffering from chronic underfunding. We are seeing: - A multi-billion dollar repair backlog leaving kids in crumbling buildings. - A lack of EAs and support staff that leaves students with special needs without the help they require to stay in school. I urge you to listen to communities and take the following actions: Reverse the school board takeover and protect the power of locally elected trustees. - Restore funding to our classrooms to ensure every student has the support staff and safe environment they deserve. - Decision-making belongs in our communities, not in a minister’s office. It is time to respect local democracy and fund our schools properly.
