Protect the Waterloo Moraine: Our Water Is Not for Sale

The Waterloo Region’s drinking water comes from the Waterloo Moraine, a critical underground aquifer system that sustains more than 600,000 residents today and must support one million by 2050. The Ford government is threatening it. By weakening environmental oversight and approving aggregate operations that extract up to nine million litres of groundwater a day, Doug Ford is gambling with the region’s most finite and irreplaceable resource.

The Waterloo Moraine supplies safe drinking water to hundreds of thousands of Ontarians today, and it must continue to do so for the one million residents Waterloo Region is expected to reach by 2050. Your government’s decisions are putting that future at risk. By weakening environmental oversight, approving reckless urban sprawl on primary recharge zones, and granting massive commercial water-taking permits to aggregate operations, your government is choosing short-term corporate gain over the long-term water security of our communities. We urge your government to act on the motion tabled by MPP Aislinn Clancy and deliver a sustainable framework for regional growth that protects our groundwater for generations to come.
