Protect Ontario’s Environment

For over eight years, the Ford government has been selling off Ontario’s environment to the rich and powerful — handing the Greenbelt to PC donors and gutting conservation authorities. Doug Ford doesn’t care about the places you love; he only cares about the rich and powerful.

But everyday Ontarians care deeply. A Nature Canada survey found that 82 per cent of us believe governments must prevent species extinction, and 76 per cent say protecting local nature is personally important. The system is rigged against everyday people, but we have a public mandate to fight back.

The Ontario Greens are ready to put people over profits and protect the places we love:

Permanently protect the Greenbelt and hold the rich and powerful accountable.
Create a permanent Foodbelt to stop corporations from paving over our farmland.
Repeal conservation authority cuts and reverse forced amalgamations to restore independent watershed protection across Ontario.
Get oil and gas corporations out of our pockets by investing in renewable energy.

On World Environment Day, I write on behalf of everyday Ontarians who care about the air they breathe, the water they drink, and the natural spaces their families explore. For more than eight years, your government has put the interests of the rich and powerful ahead of the people of Ontario. Greenbelt land was handed to PC donors. Conservation authorities were forced into amalgamation, undermining the independent oversight our watersheds and wildlife depend on. Renewable energy projects were cancelled. Ontario’s climate commitments were abandoned. Doug Ford has forgotten who he works for. The people of Ontario have not forgotten what they want. A Nature Canada survey found that 82 per cent of Canadians say governments have a responsibility to prevent species from going extinct. Seventy-six per cent say protecting local nature is personally important to them. And 81 per cent say corporations that damage natural spaces should be required to pay for conservation. In Ontario specifically, 65 per cent of residents say senior levels of government must step in when environmental protections fall short. These are not partisan numbers. They are a public mandate. Your government is ignoring it. The Ontario Greens are asking your government to act: Permanently protect the Greenbelt and hold the rich and powerful accountable. Create a permanent Foodbelt to stop corporations from paving over our farmland. Repeal conservation authority cuts and reverse forced amalgamations to restore independent watershed protection across Ontario.
