Bill 5 is still the law, and it’s still Doug Ford’s blueprint for handing power to wealthy insiders. We must keep fighting his reckless power grab, and stand up for Indigenous rights, local voices, and the rule of law!
Bill 5: Over a Year Later
In June 2025, Doug Ford rammed a dangerous and highly controversial bill through the legislature, disguised as an economic growth plan.
In actuality, Bill 5 is nothing short of a power grab. It lets Ford and his government give wealthy insiders the greenlight to bulldoze without consequences: a free pass to ignore provincial and municipal laws.
Indigenous rights, public consultation, environmental assessments, and labour protections: all on the chopping block.
The damage hasn’t gone away. The rules for special economic zones are now written, and Bill 5 replaced the Endangered Species Act with severely weakened protections that are not science-backed, leaving Ontario’s most vulnerable species at risk of extinction.
A Pattern of Power Grabs
Bill 5 wasn’t the first time the Ford government has prioritized private interests over public good, and it hasn’t been the last. It’s an ugly pattern of this government.
From the infamous Greenbelt giveaway, to the pay-to-play Ontario Place spa and parking garage complex, to selling off our public health care system in favour of for-profit clinics.
And the list keeps growing: forcing the amalgamation of the conservation authorities that protect our watersheds, and moving to override local council with a Minister’s Zoning Order to sell off public shoreline in Muskoka.
We can’t stop pushing back against Ford’s backroom deals that ignore the public good.
Ontarians deserve better. Bill 5 is still the law, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Let’s take the power back.
