Big Tech Is Profiting Off Your Kids. Tell Doug Ford to Act.
Social media and AI companies have spent billions engineering products designed to maximize the time children spend on screens, and they’ve done it knowing the harm it causes: anxiety, loneliness, and real damage to mental health and learning outcomes. The Ford government has known about this. It has done nothing.
Ontario Greens Deputy Leader Aislinn Clancy, a former school social worker, has introduced the Keeping Our Kids Safe Online Act to change that. The bill would establish an expert working group of parents, youth, educators, and social media specialists to develop a plan to ban social media and AI chatbots in schools, create a curriculum on digital citizenship and online safety, hold tech companies accountable for harms to children, and fund mental health supports for kids. Unplugged Canada, a parent-led national advocacy group, is already calling for exactly this.
The solution is on the table. Doug Ford needs to pass it.
- Pass the Keeping Our Kids Safe Online Act to protect children from the harms of social media and AI in schools
- Ban social media and AI chatbots in classrooms and create a curriculum on digital citizenship and online safety
- Hold technology and social media companies legally accountable for harms to children
- Fund children’s mental health organizations to address the impacts of technology on kids
