Kids are going hungry in Doug Ford’s Ontario
November 3, 2026
QUEEN'S PARK — Schreiner released the following statement in response to the release of Daily Bread Food Bank’s Who’s Hungry? Report:
“Life has become completely unaffordable for hardworking families in Ontario. It’s kids who are going hungry as a result of Doug Ford’s policies.
One in eight children rely on a food bank in Toronto and more than two thirds of parents visiting foodbanks report going hungry to feed their children.
This is completely devastating, but the root causes are clear: Doug Ford refuses to fund affordable homes. He’s forcing hardworking people to choose between paying rent and buying groceries.
For one in four food bank users, the cost of housing consumes all of their income. There’s nothing left for food or other necessities. These problems become even worse for people living in legislated poverty because the Ford government refuses to raise social assistance to be in line with the cost of living.
We don’t have to let kids go hungry anywhere in our province. The solutions are not complicated. Ontario Greens are calling on the Ford government to:
- Invest in affordable housing, including non-profit, co-op and supportive housing;
- Legalize gentle density and missing middle housing and build more kinds of homes to bring down housing costs for everyone;
- Reinstate rent control on all rental homes to regulate rental increases year-to-year and implement vacancy control to limit rent increases between tenancies;
- Immediately raise social assistance rates above the poverty line so people with disabilities can afford the basic necessities;
- Implement a wealth tax on the super rich to fund programs to make life more affordable for people.”
