Doug Ford can’t deliver on housing and he knows it
June 25, 2026
QUEEN'S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement responding to news that the Ford government admitted that it can’t reach its own housing target.
“Doug Ford was elected on the promise to build 1.5 million homes. Instead, his bad housing policies have driven Ontario into its worst housing crisis in history.
Now, he is waiving the white flag while refusing to make it easier to build homes people can afford because he is prioritizing the profits of rich and powerful investors.
This is hitting everyday people hard. People working multiple jobs are lining up at foodbanks because they cannot afford rent and groceries. Young people are still living in their parents’ basements wondering if they will ever own a home.
To make life more affordable for everyone, we need to build homes for people, not profits. That means investing in deeply affordable non-profit, co-op and supportive housing, bringing back rent control and making it easier to build affordable homes in existing neighbourhoods.
If the premier wants to fix the mess he got us into, he can start by getting back to work in the Legislature and passing my bill, the Homes You Can Afford in the Communities You Love Act.
If passed, this bill would legalize missing middle homes like fourplexes and multiplexes. It would reduce common barriers to building so we can get shovels in the ground now.
It’s time for Doug Ford to take responsibility for the crisis he created and start building homes that work for people, not profits.”
