Schreiner: Ontario receives failing grade on ending poverty

QUEEN'S PARK — Schreiner released the following statement in response to the release of Food Banks Canada’s poverty report card, giving Ontario a D– in eliminating poverty.

“Time and time again, the Ford government puts the rich and powerful ahead of everyday people. While the Premier wastes money on island airports and private jets, Ontarians are struggling just to make it to the next day.

Forty-three percent of Ontarians are spending more than 30 percent of their income on housing. And yet this government is actively driving the cost of housing up. 

It continues to side with speculators and corporate developers, rolling back rent control and refusing to remove barriers to building more homes in existing neighbourhoods.

The Premier could reverse this trend today by reinstating rent control, building affordable and supportive homes, and removing barriers to building missing middle housing.

Ontarians deserve a government that works for them—not for billionaires.”
