Schreiner tables motion to protect gig workers
May 14, 2026
QUEEN'S PARK — Mike Schreiner introduced a motion calling on the province to implement a Gig Workers Bill of Rights.
“Gig workers keep our economy moving—from car shares to grocery delivery.
But for too long, the corporations that rely on gig workers have been allowed to skirt labour laws to make more money off workers’ backs,” said Schreiner.
“Most gig workers don’t make minimum wage and don’t have access to basic employment rights like sick days, EI or WSIB.”
“One in ten workers in Canada are gig workers. They are the foundation of key industries like hospitality and transportation. And they deserve to make enough money to afford groceries and rent, and to care for their families.
“That’s why I’ve tabled a motion calling on the government to make all gig workers employees under the Employment Standards Act and Labour Relations Act with basic labour rights like minimum wage for all hours of work and the right to collective bargaining.
It’s time to give workers full access to benefits programs, make gig work count towards Permanent Residency applications and give temporary workers the same workplace protections as all other workers.”
“Passing this motion is an opportunity for the Ford government to help working people and make Ontario a more fair and affordable place to live for everybody.”
