Clancy: Doug Ford punching down on our most vulnerable

May 4, 2026

QUEEN'S PARK — Aislinn Clancy issued the following statement in response to new legislation that would give special constables the power to arrest riders:

“Instead of addressing the root causes of Ontario’s drug poisoning crisis, Doug Ford is making things worse. He is pushing vulnerable people further into crisis and doing nothing to solve the real problem.

After shutting down supervised consumption sites, he criminalized poverty and addiction by imposing fines and jail time for people using drugs in parks and now on transit.

Criminalization doesn’t make drug use go away – we’ve already seen that. In reality, it leads to more public drug use, more infectious disease spread, more drug poisonings showing up in our ERs and ultimately, more lives lost.

I’m calling on this government to halt this cruel legislation and make meaningful investments in mental health and addictions care for everyone.”
