Schreiner: Ford’s cuts will cost more lives

QUEEN'S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement responding to the Ford government cutting funding for more supervised consumption sites.

“Closing these sites will cost lives and make our communities less safe.

Drug poisonings in the Toronto area are already way up compared to last year because of this government’s first round of SCS cuts. 

Closing SCS sites won’t make drug use go away – we’ve already seen that. In reality, it leads to more public drug use, more infectious disease spread, more drug poisonings showing up in our ERs and ultimately, more lives lost. 

We need a range of tools to support people in this province struggling with addiction. Harm reduction is an essential part of that. Ontario Greens continue to call on the Premier and the Minister of Health to properly invest in harm reduction as part of a comprehensive plan to provide low-barrier mental health and addictions care to every single Ontarian who needs it.”
