Housing for people, not for profits
March 13, 2026
TORONTO — MPPs Schreiner and Clancy meet with York South-Weston Tenant Union and Toronto renters.
Ontario Greens Leader MPP Mike Schreiner and Deputy Leader MPP Aislinn Clancy met with members of the York South-Weston Tenant Union to talk about challenges facing renters in Ontario, tour local buildings and speak directly to renters. They discussed how the Ford government’s continual erosion of tenant rights has resulted in an increase in dishonest tactics from bad-acting landlords like above-guideline rent increases and renovictions.
After speaking with renters who are experiencing this first-hand, Clancy remarked,
“If the Premier spent as much time talking to renters as he does corporate landlords, he might understand what’s at stake.
These are people’s homes and people need a roof and food in order to live.”
On returning to the legislature, Schreiner said,
“If we’re going to solve the housing affordability crisis, we must protect renters. As we return to the legislature, Ontario Greens will fight to make housing work for people, not for profits. We will work to protect renters and hold this government accountable.”
Ontario Greens continue to call on the Ford government to:
- Reinstate rent control on all units to regulate rental increases year-to-year;
- Implement vacancy control to limit rent increases between tenancies; and
- Establish a clear system for above-guideline rent increases that governs which renovations are necessary and can qualify for an increase in rent.
Greens will work to make sure that everyone in Ontario feels safe and secure in a home they can afford close to friends, family and work.
