Ford government underfunding on housing and homelessness
March 5, 2026
QUEEN'S PARK — Aislinn Clancy released the following statement in response to a new FAO report on the effect of subsidized housing programs in Ontario.
“This report confirms what we’ve heard from local leaders for years now: municipalities are being forced to bear the costs of Ontario’s housing and homelessness crisis. Meanwhile, the Ford government is missing in action.
By 2028, municipalities are going to be spending almost six times more than the province on subsidized housing alone. This level of downloading is irresponsible and unsustainable. The Premier needs to take responsibility for the problems caused by his own housing failures.
Even worse, despite rising municipal spending, the majority of people who need subsidized housing support in Ontario are not getting it. That means more people sleeping on the streets or on friends’ couches because the Ford government refuses to take action.
Instead of encouraging fantasy projects, it’s the Premier’s job to help ensure people are fed and have a roof over their heads. It’s the Premier that has caused these problems and it’s the Premier who needs to act—by building more homes, strengthening protections for renters and investing in deeply affordable housing.”
