Schreiner hears from Wellington-Halton Hills community on housing

January 22, 2026

ELORA — Mike Schreiner was in Wellington-Halton Hills yesterday connecting with the community on the impact of the housing crisis in their communities.

Schreiner was in Fergus to hear from people with lived experience of homelessness and to visit Habitat for Humanity’s new affordable townhome community, Garafraxa Village.

“This is the kind of non-profit housing the provincial government needs to be supporting. Homes people can afford in the communities they love, close to the things they need. This opportunity is life-changing for individuals currently living in unsafe, unsuitable or unaffordable housing and for whom homeownership might otherwise be out of reach,” said Schreiner.

Schreiner then participated in a housing roundtable and panel discussion hosted by the Wellington-Halton Hills Green Party Riding Association alongside local housing experts, and facilitated by Centre Wellington City Councillor Bronwynne Wilton. Over 50 community members attended the event.

Addressing attendees, Schreiner said, “It’s never been harder to make ends meet in rural communities. Homelessness is skyrocketing and the provincial government has left municipalities on the hook for the largest share of housing and homelessness funding.

Rural communities have a small tax base and property tax payers are maxed out – it’s time for this government to step up for rural communities, reverse unfair downloading and invest in deeply affordable homes. The fastest and cheapest way to increase housing supply is for the government to legalize fourplexes and multiplexes so people can afford homes in the communities they love without paving over the farmland that feeds us and drives rural economies.”
