Ford proposes to gut tenant rights, fuel homelessness
October 24, 2025
GUELPH — Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the Ford government’s latest legislation that would decimate tenant rights in Ontario.
“This government will stop at nothing to strip renter protections and drive up costs for everyone.
This new legislation would open the door to a new lease expiry loophole that would make it easier to kick out tenants and jack up rents, ramp up eviction enforcement and weaken tenants’ ability to stay housed.
Since the Ford government axed rent control on new units in 2018, Ontario’s homelessness crisis has exploded from 20,000 to over 80,000 people.
This latest legislation pours gas on that already out-of-control fire.
The same day that the Ford government unanimously voted NO to MPP Clancy’s bill, Homelessness Ends with Housing, which would have created a plan and targets for more deeply affordable rental units and kept people secure in their homes, they dropped this bomb which already has Ontarians panicking.
Instead of building affordable housing or protecting our supply of affordable rentals, Doug Ford is putting thousands of Ontario families on notice: your home could be ripped out from under you at any moment.”
