It’s time to address the root causes of homelessness

KITCHENER — Aislinn Clancy released the following statement in response to the Premier’s comments praising the dismantling of a Barrie encampment:

“It’s time for the Premier to take responsibility for the homelessness crisis our province is facing.

Research from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario makes it clear: the root causes of homelessness are chronic underinvestment in deeply affordable housing, mental health and addictions care, and the growing economic pressures on communities.

The solution to homelessness is housing. Safe, stable, affordable homes for all.

Instead of punching down, criminalizing homelessness and shaming vulnerable people, it’s time to lead with evidence, compassion and real investment in housing.

The Homelessness Ends with Housing Act, which I’m proud to co-sponsor with MPP Fairclough, lays out a plan to end homelessness in Ontario within 10 years through a proven, housing-first approach.

It’s time to take a different path – one that is compassionate, practical and that we know will improve lives and create safer, healthier communities across the province.”
