Ontario missing opportunity to lead the green economy

September 11, 2025

GUELPH — Mike Schreiner responded to the inclusion of Small Modular Reactors at Darlington in Prime Minister Carney's initial suite of nation-building projects:

“We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to lead the global transition to a clean, green economy. But Ontario risks being left behind by failing to embrace the faster, cheaper, cleaner alternatives already powering economies around the world.

At a time when global investment in the green economy has reached $2.2 trillion, Ontario should be positioning itself as a leader in renewable energy, energy efficiency and cleantech innovation.

Projects like wind, solar and energy storage can lower energy bills, reduce climate pollution and create more livable, sustainable communities across the province. These are the nation-building initiatives we need right now. Ones that deliver economic opportunity and environmental resilience now.

Right now we could create good paying jobs using Ontario steel to build steel racking for solar and wind turbines and generate low cost power.

The world is moving forward. Ontario can’t get left behind.”
