Ford’s Fossil Fuel Pact: A Dangerous New Direction for Ontario’s Future

July 8, 2025

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens leader Mike Schreiner held a press conference at Queen’s Park in response to Premier Ford’s MOU with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith:

“This MOU is not about energy security. It’s a taxpayer-funded giveaway to oil and gas companies,” Schreiner said at Queen’s Park today. “While countries around the world are accelerating the clean energy revolution, Ford is planning to pour public money into outdated fossil fuel infrastructure.”

“Global investment in renewables is now more than double that of fossil fuels, with $2.2 trillion invested in clean energy this year alone. Renewables like wind, solar, and battery storage are now the lowest cost source of energy, yet the Ford government continues to ignore the jobs and investment dollars pouring into clean energy,” Schreiner said.

“It’s a complete failure of economic leadership.”

Schreiner emphasized that the jobs and prosperity of the future lie in renewable energy, clean tech, and green manufacturing,“Ontario has the tools and talent to lead, but this government is actively hostile to that future.”

Schreiner drew a comparison with Ford’s now infamous Bill 5, “This MOU tells the same story as Bill 5: a blatant power grab that bypasses public consultation, ignores Indigenous consent, and strips away the environmental, labour and democratic protections that Ontarians rely on.”

To push back against power grabs like Bill 5, Schreiner announced he is launching a province-wide tour to meet with communities, Indigenous leaders, environmentalists, farmers, and local activists to “say No to Bill 5, and to put the power back where it belongs: with the people of Ontario.”
