Housing advocates call on government to pass Schreiner’s Homes You Can Afford in Communities You Love Act
February 28, 2024
QUEEN'S PARK — Housing advocates and industry leaders gathered at Queen’s Park to call on the Ford government to pass Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner’s Bill 156, the Homes You Can Afford in the Communities You Love Act.
Schreiner and Ontario Greens Deputy Leader Aislinn Clancy were joined by representatives from Guelph and District Area Realtors, multiplex housing developer Clip Homes, and More Neighbours Toronto to call out the Ford government’s housing failures and urge them to update outdated planning laws that block the construction of multiplex and midrise housing in existing neighbourhoods.
“In the middle of an affordability crisis, this type of archaic zoning defies common sense and makes Ontario a less inclusive and welcoming province,” said Guelph and District Area Realtors President Dillon Fraser.
“We need provincial leadership to ensure that gentle density and smart growth are the law in all communities.”
“The government has had many an opportunity to seek the implementation of key recommendations from its own housing affordability task force,” said More Neighbours President Eric Lombardi. “It is time for change in this province.”
“More Neighbours Toronto is thrilled to endorse this piece of legislation as a crucial step the province needs to take in order to achieve its housing goals.”
