Ontario needs a Bradford Bypass impact assessment
May 11, 2023
QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens leader and MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to reports that the federal government will not conduct an impact assessment of the Bradford Bypass, despite a court ruling that would have allowed it to reverse the decision.
“Given what we know about the destructive nature of the Bradford Bypass, it’s extremely disappointing that the federal government doesn’t see the writing on the wall.
Doug Ford’s Bradford Bypass is a risky scheme that threatens our environment and quality of life – increasing climate pollution by 87 million kilograms per year, paving over 42 acres of the Holland Marsh, and slicing right through the Greenbelt.
Ontario Greens have been clear: super-sprawl highways like the Bradford Bypass and Highway 413 need to be cancelled immediately.
They will increase expensive sprawl, ramp up climate pollution, and destroy the nature that protects us and the farmland that feeds us – locking us into even more endless gridlock.
Instead, we should be investing in connected, climate-ready communities with affordable transit options that protect people and nature.
Ontarians want the federal government to step in and put a stop to Ford’s environmentally destructive, sprawl-at-all-costs agenda.
I call on Minister Guilbeault to immediately reverse course and commit to a full impact assessment of the environmentally destructive Bradford Bypass.”
