Secrecy around ballooning Ontario Line costs part of a disturbing pattern

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens leader and MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to reports that Ford government officials are concealing the escalating cost of the Ontario Line subway project.

“This government’s secrecy around the mounting costs of the Ontario Line should concern all of us.

Estimated costs have almost doubled since the project was announced just a few years ago.

And when asked today about the status of the perpetually delayed Eglinton Crosstown LRT, the Premier was once again unable to give a credible answer.

These escalating financial costs are the result of a Premier that tore up existing transit plans and charged ahead without proper planning guided by evidence.

For years, the government has refused to take responsibility for the ballooning cost and timeline of the LRT. And now we’re seeing the same disturbing pattern play out with the Ontario Line.

Ontarians deserve a government that’s accountable and transparent. And they deserve to know the truth about how their taxpayer dollars are being spent. Especially when tens of billions of dollars are on the line.

It’s time for this government to step up and deliver a credible plan to get transit projects completed on time and on budget.”
