MPPs should not be lobbying Chief Medical Officer

October 27, 2020

The Premier should not be urging MPPs to put the squeeze on health officials and make a decision that is at odds with COVID-19 data.

QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement after the Premier said he encouraged two area MPPs to lobby the Medical Officer of Health not to impose restrictions in Halton region:

“The Premier should not be urging MPPs to put the squeeze on health officials and make a decision that is at odds with COVID-19 data.

The Chief Medical Officer of Health should not be on the receiving end of political lobbying from MPPs.

Dr. Williams’s job is to protect public health and make recommendations to the Premier on how we defeat this virus, full stop.

It is Mr. Ford’s job to make a final decision because he is the Premier of the province who must balance health and economic considerations.

It troubles me that the Premier is muddying the waters instead of owning his role in the pandemic response.”
