Nominations Process

Thank you for your interest in running as a GPO candidate, or in nominating someone you think would make an excellent GPO candidate.

Here’s a quick overview of what you could expect if you decide to put your name forward.

Here’s the GPO process.

Step One: Application

The first step towards running as a candidate for the GPO is having a conversation!

You can connect with your local riding or connect with our provincial Organizers by emailing nominations@gpo.ca.

Your local riding contact, or the provincial Organizers, can walk you through the process, what to expect and how to get started.

Become a GPO member!

Joining the GPO is incredibly easy.
It’s $10 and you can join online or by calling 416 977 7476.

Submit your application to become a Nomination Contestant

Everyone interested in standing for election as a GPO candidate must first be approved as a Nomination Contestant.

You’ll need to submit an Application to become a Nomination Contestant.


Shortly after submitting your application, you’ll be contacted by a 3rd party provider for a background screening (in most cases, this is a criminal record check and social media scan).

Screening and review

Applications will be reviewed by the GPO provincial organizers.

Once the Application and all screenings are complete, the results will be submitted to the Provincial Nomination Committee (PNC).

The PNC will advise you whether your Application has been approved or denied.

If your Application is approved, congratulations! You have become a Nomination Contestant.

Some more paperwork

There are two forms required by Elections Ontario to register you as a Nomination Contestant, and then after the contest, to file a financial return for your nomination campaign.

The GPO or your local riding may be available to assist in some cases, and/or to walk you through what is required.

Step Two: Nomination Contest

Your Nomination Campaign

Now is the time to go recruit new GPO members and connect with existing members. You can encourage these members to vote for you during the Nomination Contest. Members can join or renew up to 14 days before a Nomination Contest to be eligible to vote.

In most cases, the votes will take place online.

It’s up to you whether or not you spend money on your Nomination Campaign - just keep in mind that you have to file a financial report after the contest is complete.

The Nomination Contest (Meeting)

The winner of a Nomination Contest is the first Contestant to receive 50%+1, on a ranked ballot.

If you are the winner, congratulations on becoming the next GPO Candidate in your riding!

There are a few more pieces of paperwork to be filed, and at this point you can begin working with the local riding association and other volunteers who may want to join your campaign.

**Note in the case of electoral urgency, or if a riding does not have an active riding association, a Candidate may be appointed by the PNC.
