Food and Water First
“Local food and farmers nourish our communities and sustain our local economies. The government is failing to protect the land and water resources essential for local food and farmers to thrive.” - Mike Schreiner
Only 5 per cent of Ontario's land is suitable for growing food and even less -- just 0.5% -- is prime farmland. Yet the food and farm sector employs over 740,000 people and contributes over $30 billion to our economy.
Ontario loses 350 acres of farmland every day - an area equal to the size of Toronto each year. This is due to subdivisions, quarries, highways and other development.
The goal of Food and Water First is to change provincial law so that Class 1 farmland -- the most fertile land -- and source water regions are protected in Ontario.
