Say NO to Ford’s tunnel vision

Time and time again, Doug Ford has shown us that he will do anything to avoid transparency.

Earlier this year, he announced a billion-dollar tunnel under Highway 401, and a multi-million dollar feasibility study to accompany it.

But there’s something he didn’t mention: a nearly identical feasibility study was already completed in 2021, and his government never released it.

Why keep it hidden?

Because the study showed that the tunnel would be a technical nightmare to build and may even threaten public safety.

On top of this, experts have already warned that a tunnel under Highway 401 could worsen traffic, fuel climate pollution and waste billions of public dollars.

To truly address gridlock in the GTA, we need to invest in building affordable homes in connected communities designed for people – close to jobs, family, shops and transit. Not waste time and tax-payer dollars on a project nobody asked for.

I am deeply concerned that your government is planning to conduct yet another feasibility study on tunneling under Highway 401, given that one was already conducted in 2021 that showed that the project could threaten public safety. Why are we spending more taxpayer dollars on a study that’s already been done, and why haven’t the results of the initial study been made fully public? Ontarians deserve transparency. Ontarians don’t need a tunnel under the 401. Especially if it may lead to road collapse and be dangerous for commuters. On top of this, experts have already warned that a tunnel could worsen traffic, fuel climate pollution and waste billions of public dollars. At a time when housing starts are at record lows, your government should be investing in building affordable homes in communities where people can access transit, healthcare, and employment. I urge you to release the full 2021 feasibility, halt any plans for further feasibility study work, and invest in real solutions that make it easier for Ontarians to access the things they need.
