Schreiner calls on the province to partner with municipalities

August 18, 2026

OTTAWA — Addressing delegates at the 2026 AMO conference, Schreiner called on the province to meaningfully partner with municipalities.

“Municipalities deserve a strong partner in the province—not strong chairs and mayors. A partner that respects local voices—not one that dictates from afar and takes away tools that keep communities safe.”

Echoing AMO’s long-standing position, Schreiner called on the Ford government to strike a fair fiscal deal with municipalities.

“People can’t afford the service cuts and property tax increases Ford’s policies are imposing.

Greens will continue to push for stable, predictable, multi-year infrastructure funding to unlock housing and make sure communities are resilient in the face of the increasing frequency and severity of climate-fueled unsafe weather. We cannot allow the province to download the additional $4.1 billion per year in infrastructure costs that the Financial Accountability Office estimates climate change will cost us.”

Schreiner also called out the Ford government’s inaction on the worsening housing and homelessness crisis.

“Canada’s housing crisis is a made-in-Ontario problem. Over and over this government chooses to put the profits of rich speculators and PC donors ahead of affordable homes for everyday people.

Ontario Greens will not stop fighting for the housing solutions that AMO, housing experts and the government’s own housing affordability task force have recommended. This government must protect renters,  invest in supportive, co-op and non-profit housing and legalize multiplexes and midrises as of right—to unleash homes people can afford in the communities they love without paving over our precious farmland, wetlands and forests.

We owe it to our kids, our neighbours and each other to make Ontario an affordable and fair place to live.”
