Schreiner: The people of Wilmot refuse to lose their farmland to Bill 5
July 14, 2025
WILMOT — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement after a tour of a local farm and kitchen table discussion in Wilmot.
“We’ve been supporting farmers in Wilmot in their fight for farmland by opposing the expropriation of their land for industrial development.
Now, with Bill 5, their fear is growing. This legislation could designate Wilmot as a special economic zone, stripping farmers of any power to stop the province from seizing their homes and livelihoods.
Today, I visited a local Wilmot farm and sat down with a group of determined farmers who are standing strong against the loss of their land and Bill 5’s threat to our farmland and food security.
The message from them was clear: they will not sit back while Doug Ford attacks our democracy and jeopardizes Ontario’s farmers, farmland, and the $50 billion agricultural economy that employs over 875,000 people.
Wilmot farmers are ready to do whatever it takes to protect Ontario’s farmland. And I will stand with them until we kill Bill 5 and the expropriation of their land.”
