Toronto Crowd Joins Schreiner to Launch Summer Push Against Bill 5

July 9, 2025

TORONTO — Last night, Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner kicked off his Summer Leaders Tour with a high-energy barnstorm event in Toronto, where concerned residents gathered to voice their opposition to Doug Ford’s controversial Bill 5.

The event drew a passionate crowd of Torontonians united in their outrage over the bill and determined to take action alongside the Ontario Greens.

Addressing the gathering, Schreiner said, “I want you to think back to the fall of 2023, when the Premier was finally forced to backtrack on his plan to open up the Greenbelt for development. And now, I want you to imagine the fall of 2025 – what stories will we tell about the actions we took this summer? What will you do to connect with your community and help us build a people-powered movement to protect the people and places we love in Ontario?”

The evening marked the start of a summer of action to push back against Bill 5, with attendees receiving organizing kits and resources to support grassroots mobilization across Ontario.

Closing the event, Deputy Leader and MPP for Kitchener Center Aislinn Clancy urged attendees to take immediate, concrete steps: “What struck me in our conversations tonight was the fear, and the very real concern, about losing our democracy. This is how it begins. If we allow Doug Ford to push through Bill 5 unchallenged, the consequences will be long-lasting and deeply harmful. But we have the power to stop this anti-democratic agenda. Now we just need to use it.”

The Toronto event set the tone for a summer of resistance, with the Ontario Greens committed to mobilizing communities across the province in defense of democracy, local voices, Indigenous rights, labour laws, and environmental protections.
